Why We Walk is a pop-rock sing-along anthem, written and by Bahia and produced by Jon Hayes. Originally written to raise awareness of the symptoms and signs of ovarian cancer, it has been used at walkathons and marches across the country, Canada and the UK, at events raising research funds for cancer, ALS, and Alzheimer's disease.
As a survivor of the ovarian cancer Patricia Bahia feels called to help raise awareness of the illness, the 5th leading malignant cause of death for U.S. women. “I lost a cousin to ovarian cancer, and I have more than one friend who is in treatment now, says Bahia. “I am extremely lucky to have been diagnosed early. Now cured, I am on a mission to raise awareness of the symptoms so other women can also be diagnosed in time.”
Early detection is often the key to survival, because if the illness is detected after reaching the advanced stages, it is much more difficult to treat. Early detection requires awareness of the symptoms and signs. Visit the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition at http://www.ovarian.org/symptoms.php for a list of the symptoms and signs women of all ages (and the people who love them) need to know about.
Why We Walk is written as a sing-along and call-response song, and is set at a walking speed, so it can be walked to and sung to during walks. And though it was originally inspired by her own illness, the song can be sung for anything we walk to cure--cancer, Alzheimers disease, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, HIV, ALS, etc.
A former jazz and gospel singer, Bahia started as a soloist with the acclaimed Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, where she recorded with Linda Ronstadt, performed with Joan Baez and opened for Bonnie Raitt. She discovered her bucket list desire to write songs during successful treatment for ovarian cancer 13 years ago.
With a voice as smooth as polished stone and a collection of frank, sparkling tunes in the vein of Aimee Mann, Ingrid Michaelson and Sara Bareilles, Bahia is a performing songwriter and frequent songwriting collaborator with artists and bands (Sleep Machine, MILCK, Alisha Zalkin), and has amassed several TV and film placements. Her sophomore solo effort is Save Your Heart, a 10-song LP combining elements of current pop and traditional singer-songwriter with hints of country and folk.
Patricia Bahia is available to perform and lead the crowd in singing Why We Walk and other songs at events, solo or with a band. Visit www.patriciabahia.com or contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
